About "On Documentary..."

The purpose of this blog is multi-faceted. First, it is simply to get me writing again about a subject that fascinates me. Second, it will serve as a record for the viewing responses I am currently writing for one of my MA classes, COMS 557: The Documentary Tradition, at Northern Illinois University. Third, it is a place to share my thoughts, opinions, and scholarship with those friends, family, and others who may be interested.

My hope is that the blog will become an assemblage of scholarly writing and response, opinion, and film review, along with all kinds of other stuff I feel like adding. Hope you enjoy!

My Production Work

You can check out my first short documentary (co-directed and produced with William Newman), 'Life by Joseph' , in it's entirety by clicking here.

'Life by Joseph' chronicles the unique struggle of community artist Joe Gagnepain. The documentary is a glimpse into how Joe sees the world, and in how those around him view Joe as an artist, father, husband, and community member. Exploring topics from Joe's constant battles with depression to his unorthodox way of connecting with nature as a developing artist, the piece highlights both Gagnepain's engaging personality as well as the fantastic nature of his art, often made of recycled trash.
